IS Project - Chek Dam (Chiang Mai, Thailand)

Zack and Hooi Ying participated in this IS project which was spear-headed with our Rotary club of Singapore west and also supported by our sister club, RAC NUS, embarked on an IS Project to Chek Dam, Chiang Mai (Thailand) from 6-12 December 2010.

Prior to this IS project, a fund raiser, collecting newspaper was also done together with RAC NUS to raise funds for the project.

Other than rendering help to the locals there, they were exposed to the day to day living of the locals and were introduced to the natural resources that the locals rely on for their survival. Upon their return, we had a sharing session where the 2 members related to us their experience, the beauty of Chiang Mai and Thailand in general, and the common problems that the locals face.

A Walk Down Memory Lane Carnival (Alzheimer's Disease Association)

RAC Singapore West and Interactors from Interact Club of National Junior College volunteered in the Alzheimer's Disease Association (ADA) Carnival on 21st November 2010 led by Community Service Project Director, Su Yan Xing.

Yan Xing had been liaising with ADA on supporting thier major project with getting from manpower assistance to support the project logistically.

On the day of the carnival, we were tasked to mend the different game booths with other volunteers coming from all over the country. The game booths ranged from mind boggling puzzles such as Sudoku to physically demanding activities such as Frisbee and Golf. It was definitely a new, enriching and inspiring experience for all of us.

Not only do we serve the public and particularly the elderly, we also managed to learn more about Alzheimer's Disease and mingle with the patients. The thirst and fatigue was really worth it!

Well done Yan Xing!

Hari Raya Celebrations cum PD Workshop - "Back to Basics"

On 9 October 2010, RAC Singapore West had its first of many festivals at our beloved ZR PDDR Zakir's place, celebrating Hari Raya 2010. It was day of knowing more of the Muslim most celebrated as well as food galore with the festival snacks and traditional malay food that Zack's family had prepared.

As the club had new blood of members, a workshop on getting to know Rotract more - "Back to Basics" was conducted by Zack. It was an enriching session as new members such as Yan Xing and Nuraini asked questions about Rotaract to deepen their knowledge. My kudos to Zack for the well-informed session and many thanks for the members and guests for attending this session.

1st IMH session in 2010

Rotaract Club of Singapore West had the IMH session running for the 4th year in 2010. The objective of this year's IMH project was to guide the NUS rotaract club on how to run the event and to ensure that they will be able to continue to the programme for the rest of the year ahead.

The event was held on 18th September had a total of 21 volunteers attended the event. 11 of which were members from the Rotaract Club of NUS. Due to a large group of volunteers, we were splitted up into 2 differen groups during the session.

Throughout the volunteering session, volunteers played games with the patients and had the chance to interact and know more about the patients IMH. Though first-timers looked nervous when they first entered the ward, they managed to overcome their "fear" and "anxiety" when the games progressed. The whole sesssion ended within two hours and NUS rotaract club would be holding the next IMH volunteering session this coming saturday, 2nd October 2010.

The debrief session on 26th Sept was given by our RAC West President Wahid and some of the guest volunteers who turned up were inspired by his efforts and energy in engaging the patients.

The 1st IMH volunteer session in 2010 was a successful one and we look forward to the major outing that we were be collaborating togather with NUS Rotaract Club in next year March 2011 with RAC NUS.

Family of Singapore West BBQ

In it's 4th year running, RAC Singapore West organised the Family of Singapore West BBQ on 21st August. Our sponsoring club, Rotary Club of Singapore West and together with our sister clubs - Rotaract Club of NUS and Interact Club of NJC - also supported us by attending to the bbq.

Once again, it was a night of great food, fellowing and getting to know one another as the new Rotary year begins. We also exchanged some ideas or informed our sister clubs of our proposed activities for the year to come so as to build a better bond and hopefully that they would be able to assist in the projects proposed.

Also, it was heartening news to know that RAC Singapore West had managed to get its Presidential Citation for the Rotary Year 2009/10. Congrats to IPP Keyuan and his board of directors.

Batu Pahat Installation and Sister Club Visit - RAC Ampang, KL

Zack, Wahid, Adam and his brother represented RAC Singapore West at Batu Pahat's 19th Installation on 7th August. As always, Batu Pahat rotaractors were very warm and welcome us with wide arms during our visit to their installation.

PP Chai Chin, once again, hosted us around Batu Pahat and brought us to many eatery outlets. The BP installation also gave us a chance to interact with the new board and new members of the club.

Special thanks to Whelan too for hosting all of us for the night and brought us for nasi lemak breakfast!

After our day in Batu Pahat, we decided to go to KL for an afternoon of shopping, shopping and FOOD! PP Caryn and Mun Wai from our sister club RAC Ampang, was there to host us despite our impromptu visit. Thanks Guys! It was nice meeting them and we all enjoy one another's company. Despite the short time, we also managed to update one another on our respective club. Indeed a fruitful yet short trip. All of us agreed and wished that it wouldnt come to an end!

Enjoy the photos!

Hari Raya Celebration - 3rd Oct 2009

On 3rd October, Saturday, a total of 10 members and guests came to my house for our annual Hari Raya Celebrations. They were IPP Dawn, Hooi Ying, Benedict, PP Eileen Tiang, NUS President Vincent and his 3 NUS counterparts and I. We also had a German rotaractor who attended the Hari Raya Celebrations.

It was a day to savour the delicious food that was laid on the table. And not forgetting the mouth-watering kuih-muih that was lineup. As there was an international guest, PE Wahid also took the opportunity to share with the members and guests some understanding of the ways of how a Muslim would normally celebrate Hari Raya. There were other enquiries which Wahid answered with regards to his religion, Islam.

All in all, everyone enjoyed the food and get to understand more about Islam.
